October 2022 Newsletter

Elections matter. That’s why CVA conducted the state’s first and only questionnaire focused exclusively on animals. The results are in, and they tell a story about where some candidates stand on legislation designed to make life better for animals in the state. Find out if the candidates running in your district are among those who responded to the survey and what they had to say. Their responses alone indicate that they care about animals and are committed to enacting strong laws to protect them. CVA does not endorse candidates, but those who responded deserve a special thanks – and your vote on Nov. 8.

It’s the Law: Outside Dogs Must Have
Proper Shelter in Extreme Weather

A new law went into effect Oct. 1 requiring that dogs be provided with adequate shelter and water when left outside for more than 15 minutes during weather advisories of extreme heat or cold. Passed during the 2022 session of the CT General Assembly, the law defined what is an “adequate shelter” and strengthened previous tethering regulations, providing more tools for animal control officers (ACOs) to intervene – before it’s too late. CVA will make a poster detailing the specifics as a resource available to all.

Congratulations to CVA's Student Animal Advocate!

Congratulations to CVA supporter Marley Dixon who was recently honored by the Dakin Humane Society in Springfield, MA for making a positive difference in the lives of animals and people. The 15-year-old Newtown, CT resident received the Youth Humane Award in part for her fierce dedication to animal welfare. Marley is on the national youth council for Farm Sanctuary and the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary in Newtown where she helps keep pets and their senior owners together and supports rescues and pet adoption events.

Marley looks to CVA for guidance on how to make her voice heard by writing lawmakers at the local, state, and national levels about issues impacting animals. Her next project: a campaign to raise awareness of the link between mental health and companion animals. You go, Marley! We’re proud to count you as one of us!

Notes...

CVA will be recognized next month during a fundraising breakfast for the New Milford Animal Welfare Society, a non-profit, non-destroy rescue in CT's northwest corner.  The opportunity to share CVA's mission with the area's many dedicated animal champions was made possible by CVA supporter and AWS Board Trustee Cynthia Newby.

CVA Executive Director Jo-Anne Basile was a guest lecturer at Fairfield University’s Environmental Ethics class last month. She spoke about CVA’s 14-year history of advocating for animals and presented a case study on enacting a public policy of peaceful co-existence with CT’s black bears.
