URGENT -  STOP THE RABBIT SLAUGHTER

Contact the Governor & Your Legislators NOW

Screen Shot 2023-05-03 at 6.36.33 AM.png

Legislators are getting ready to vote on HB 6726, the Department of Agriculture's (DOAG) proposal to allow slaughtering of thousands of rabbits for food consumption. Essentially, DOAG's proposal will bring "factory-like-farming" of rabbits to CT under the guise of promoting farming in the state. Rabbits are the third most common household pet after dogs and cats. Slaughtering rabbits for meat would be no different than Asia's dog meat market. Whole Foods and other specialty stores stopped selling rabbit meat after concluding there was no market for the rabbit meat. There are no rules protecting rabbit slaughter and it is one of the most inhumane processes of killing animals for food in the meat processing business. This is URGENT.  We need you to contact your legislators and the governor's office now and ask them to support efforts to strip the rabbit slaughter program from the bill or oppose the bill all together.

PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL the GOVERNOR, LT GOVERNOR AND YOUR STATE LEGISLATORS NOW.

Sample phone script: I am a constituent living at XX street and town and animal issues are important to me. CT Department of Agriculture's proposal to slaughter thousands of rabbits for food consumption is out of touch with the wishes of most Connecticut residents. Please support amendments to strip the rabbit slaughter provisions from HB 6726 or oppose the bill in its entirety. Thank you for your consideration.

P.S. You need to provide your address so they know you are their constituent.

Email the governor and your state senator and representative - click here to find your state legislators; the governor's email is here and the Lt. Governor is here.   A sample email is provided below which you can cut and paste into an email.  Consider personalizing the text  - even a little bit because some legislators said they don't like getting emails that all say the same thing.  Put the following in the Subject Line:  Oppose HB 6726 and Stop the Slaughter of Thousands of Rabbits.

Dear [Governor, Lt. Governor, Senator or Representative]

As your constituent, I am asking  you to support efforts to remove the rabbit slaughter provisions from HB 6726.  CT has no appetite to establish a factory like farming program that will slaughter thousands of rabbits for consumption.  Rabbits are the third most popular companion pet and slaughtering practices of rabbits are the most inhumane in the meat processing business.  Many CT residents overwhelmingly made clear they do not want our state to be known for large scale farming of these animals for meat.

I urge you to support efforts to remove this provision or oppose HB 6726 in its entirety.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
